A tradition in farming

Emble is a family farming business on the coast of north Northumberland in a protected area designated for its exceptional natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage.

Our family has farmed throughout the Scottish Borders and Northumberland for generations, most recently on this most northerly coastal slice where we have been based for the last 50 years.

Over the last decade, our business has expanded into hosting visitors to Northumberland in our self-catered accommodation, here at our HQ on Southfield Farm and in the village of Embleton, where our cottages sit looking out over Emble Farms pasture.

“The past is what binds us. The future leads us.”

Martin Margiela

A family farm

Our farm is still at the heart of what we do and we have tended to our crops and livestock in time-honoured fashion for many, many years.

We still look to the generations before us and follow some of the same traditional methods, where they serve to create a better future for the land that we look after.

We raise our beef the traditional way. Traditional breeds, grazed on age-old pasture. Our crop rotations operate on principals that can be traced back to ancient history.

We innovate and farm regeneratively, learning from the past and building towards a sustainable, thriving future.

The first cottage renovation

In 2018, we renovated Calder Cottage in Embleton and launched it as a holiday let. Since then, we have welcomed hundreds of guests. Many of them return year after year and have become good friends.

Seven years later, in 2025, we took on the next project, turning the neighbouring cottage, an almost mirror-image, into a second holiday let. We named this one ‘Turner’, after the painter JMW Turner who was greatly inspired by his tours of the north.

The Blue House launches

The farmhouse at Southfield Farm has been fully renovated to accommodate groups and families, and launched in 2026.

We call it The Blue House and it’s a homely place to stay in the countryside, with the beautiful Northumbrian coastline on the doorstep.

We now have three Emble Farm self-catered properties to choose from.

Our farm cabins

From 2019 to 2022, Southfield Farm was also home to five cabins where we hosted family glamping holidays. They had canvas walls but were fully decked out on wooden floors with wood-burning stoves, kitchens, bathrooms and proper beds.

Many of our followers know us from this time. We loved sharing good local food on supper club and pizza nights, gathering around camp fires, and providing farm tours.

Sadly, we were blighted first by COVID and then Storm Arwen. We had to close the cabins after suffering extensive storm damage. It marked the end of this chapter.

Our charity

Emble Arts was born out of lockdown with the simple aim of sharing the gift and joy of reading, for free, in our local community.

We installed 6 ‘Little Libraries’ at locations on the coast. Now, there are more than double.

They all look the same, little black huts, and continue to operate on the premise of, ‘take a book, leave a book’.
